GALLERY: Snowy McAlister Winter Surfing Festival
WHERE: Manly, NSW, Australia
WHEN: 7-9 June, 2008
The 2008 Snowy McAlister Winter Surfing Festival was held over the June Long weekend in Manly NSW Australia. This was the 21st year the Snowy was held and it was one of the best.
For the first time we saw Tandem surfing and Stand Up Paddling introduced. The crowd loved these specatular types of surfing.
The Stand Up Paddling was broken into two divisions; firstly a surfing event and secondly a 3 kilometer distance paddling event.
Other highlights of the weekend were Nat Young launched his latest book during the event. Also Ray Moran opened up the Australian Surf Museum in the Manly Surf Club for everyone to view the wonderful collection of surfing items on display. This included a very old surfboard of Snowy's. Ray generously loaned it to GSI and Jamie Willems, our Queensland Territory Manager, paddled out on it and miraculously caught a couple of waves. The board took on a bit of water and must have weighed close to 60 kgs when it came out of the water.
All in all the weekend was a huge success and everyone is already looking forward to the 22nd Snowy.
